zaha hadid'in "mobile art container"ı yere inmiş

şimdi Dinçer'in blogunda lagerfield okuyunca dank etti. evet geçen gün Hong Kong'da açılmış Zaha Hadid'in Chanel için ürettiği "pack away" galeri ya da Mobile Art: Chanel Contemporary Art Container. Wallpaper dergisi gururlanıyor onları bir araya ilk biz getirdik diye.

"Mobile Art highlights the emergence of a new relationship between fashion, art and architecture. As Lagerfield explains; 'In the first fashion magazine, published in the late 18th century, the opening article said: "Fashion and luxury are the taxes of vanity." Well now we are returning these taxes to the artists and architects. This is our tax. Our profession is to flatter and to encourage vanity. I think this is how it should be .' To this end, the designer sees fashion's endorsement of art as a sort of 'private patronage that benefits everyone. It is modern, healthy and interesting.'"

"MOBILE ART is not so much an exhibition to be visited as a landscape to wander through in a completely new way: to experience the artists' installations, visitors equipped with a MP3 player must let themselves be guided mentally and physically by a soundtrack created by the label "Soundwalk" in collaboration with each of the artists. This soundtrack mixes the original music of a diverse range of artists with voice and ambient sound effects."

the post-yugoslavian condition of institutional critique

Against the background of a more general enquiry into artistic and political institutional critique in the project transform, the current issue of the eipcp web journal transversal undertakes a specific survey of the territory of ex-Yugoslavia. The starting points of post-Yugoslavian institutional critique are based on partly shared experiences from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and the neoliberal transformation processes of the past twenty years. Yet they also fan out into a multitude of breaks, discontinuities and dislocations, depending on the different positions in these neoliberal/neocolonial processes that have developed in the geographies between Croatia and Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo, Bosnia and Slovenia.

On 8 February 2008, the curators of the project Vida Knezevic, Kristian Lukic, Ivana Marjanovic and Gordana Nikolic asked PUBLICLY the Ministry of culture of Serbia and the city of Belgrade to react firmly against such nationalist forces in order to protect the exhibition in the future. The curators insist on the right to present the project in Belgrade
in the near future.

"greenwashing" by latitudes at fondazione sandretto re rabaudengo turin

What is at stake in today's constant bombardment of ecological guilt, corporate agendas and political point-scoring with respect to so-called 'environmental issues'? The 25 artists presented in the exhibition 'Greenwashing. Environment: Promises, Perils and Perplexities' do not just passively lament the degradation of our planet, or provide pragmatic solutions. Instead they actively articulate the contradictions and responsibilities that we are encountering personally and as a society. The works in Greenwashing – a term used to describe misleading ecological practices – do not necessarily proclaim a 'correct' ethical or 'green' agenda. They allow the possibility for broadening and analysing our perceptions and actions, setting a critical attitude into motion that intervenes and infiltrates, re-interprets and decodes humans' relation to non-human life, as well as to each other.

With works by (*new production): Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla, Lara Almárcegui*, Maria Thereza Alves, Ibon Aranberri, Amy Balkin, The Bruce High Quality Foundation*, Chu Yun, A Constructed World*, Minerva Cuevas, Ettore Favini*, Cyprien Gaillard*, Tue Greenfort*, Norma Jeane, Cornelia Parker, Jorge Peris*, Wilfredo Prieto*, RAF / Reduce Art Flights, Tomás Saraceno*, Santiago Sierra, Simon Starling, Fiona Tan, Nikola Uzunovski, Sergio Vega*, Wang Jianwei and James Yamada*.

notes from luc tuymans

"Painted time is a different zone. This is why I don't believe that a painting -although I've been accused of it many times now- can be truly topical. A painting's physicality gives it a different persistence and a different perception. If you ask people to remember a painting and a photograph, their description of the photograph is far more accurate than that of the painting. Strangely enough, there is a physical element intertwined with the painting. It shakes loose an emotional element within the viewer, which is different than with a photograph."
...
" Life is politics, basically, but you don't just go to a gallery and put the words 'art' and 'politics' on the wall. An artwork should point in more than one direction, not be this sort of placating, self demonstrating, witnessing element. It is not important to convince people; they should convince themselves, they should look with their own eyes."
...
"When you feel concentrated within the intensity of making paintings, you know exactly what you are doing. When I start to paint, it is real agony, I get nervous. The day before I am already working up to it. Then I get to the studio, and once the image starts to emerge and come together, pleasure kicks in. And then you can see things that no other person can see. And then the most important things in the painting become these small details. Every painting has a weakness and a breaking point, where the essence of a painting lies. In my case it is never in the centre. "

cevdet erek's laboratory of mind and senses- in english this time on public demand

cevdet erek's a few retrospectives feels like a laboratory of mind and senses. the rhythm of this laboratory has turned the gallery space into a kind of parallel universe. one feels that SSS, Ruler -produced during residency in Cairo- and Studio evolve from each other in this universe.
a laboratory of mind and senses because image doesn't work properly without sound, it is the sound triggering thinking and making one curious about the structure behind the whole composition. cevdet already opens up his experimentation process, all his stops in the exhibition structure. doing that is he subtly trying to push his "presents" to construct their own variation secretly?
is it possible to state that rather than the golden proportion -as read in the exhibition text- it is the idea of variation which tunes his work? the tip comes from the subtitle of his recent publication SSS: variation for theme and carpet. variation evolves between visual and audio, among various media and different agents. that's why it includes more than the literal technical term of variation; the work is more about mathematical processes and various objects triggering variation. in ruler for instance variation turns from an arabic ruler to his father's ruler of life, a pair of rings on which leyla and kerim are written in kufi arabic, the rhythm formed out of leyla and kerim's repeating each other in kufi, that rhythm transferred on the lcd screen from bendir in the form of ruler. thus variation spreads over different layers, deforms the linear. on the other hand, this is the way cevdet lives together with the different culture he has been in through his own language, his own translation so to say.
a last point. thinking about all this, i have arrived to say that the terms viewing or viewer are not covering the experience of being present there in the exhibition space. i shared this with cevdet and he asked how to mean it then. being present with mind and senses, responding, thinking along the process...present, possible participant or the ones taking part? presents, we decided, as you have also read above.

ps: you can go back to turkish version of this post for exhibition images

cevdet erek'in duyu düşün laboratuarı (amsterdam'dan canlı)

Something RAW- with Rudi Laermans

"Choreographers are more and more ready to be guided by film. Not so much that they take film as their departure but they use the lens of the camera to look at everyday life. The makers have come to the realization that everything we see has been seen through the eye of a camera. performances are created that make use of a play, fast forward and delete button. And the audience is equally familiar with looking at the world not directly but via film or TV so they are not going to be worried by it. But should dance still be performed live?"

post post fetish

Doha Islamic Arts Museum designed by famous Korean architect Ieoh Ming Pei is counted among post post post modern museums. The museum is going to open with an exhibition titled "Beyond the Borders" which includes some pieces from Turkish Islamic Arts Museum in Istanbul. Dominating the coastline called Al Cornishe, the museum itself is a huge installation. At each turn it reflects the light differently, it is so coherent yet different with a multiplied set of facades. Pei brings a meta interpretation to the basic local bedouin architecture. It's been one of my fetish buildings since my Doha visit. How efficiently it will function as a museum beyond being a superb design, we'll see in the future.

postsecularism?

Postsecular Lecture Series

Faculty of the Humanities, Utrecht University

BAK, Basis Actuele Kunst (Centre for Contemporary Art), Utrecht

The aim of this academic year-long lecture series is to investigate postsecularism as our historical condition and to approach it as a series of crossroads and mutual engagements of secularism and religious discourses in the contemporary world and especially in Europe. A further aim is to map the intersections of postsecularism with social and political theory as well as cultural and artistic practices and movements. Special emphasis will be placed on issues of political theory, Islam in Europe, ethics, human rights, gender and feminist practice, contemporary art and the European tradition of liberal humanism.

The lecture series will draw together fields of scholarship which are often separated by disciplinary orientation, institutional divides and methodological traditions, so as to create spaces for dialogue and cross-disciplinary exchanges. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of and the scholarship about postsecular practices. These cover two inter-related areas: on the one hand neo-religious developments in contemporary societies, politics and culture and on the other the critique of the historical, conceptual and ethno-racial underpinnings of the European humanist tradition of secularism which is too often taken for granted as the universal norm. This universalistic assumption will be analysed from a variety of angles and critically assessed. The role of women in recent trans-national religious movements will also receive special attention.

A related aim is to make a contribution to a field and a style of scholarship that recognizes the complexity and heterogeneity of European critical thought in the Humanities and attempts to make it socially relevant. Thus, the emphasis will not be on anyone religion, but rather on the importance of understanding the role all religious traditions, as well as their related forms of secularism(s), play in the construction of identity in general and European identity in particular.

The lecture series will discuss the content of the term 'secularism' - as well as its recent inception as: (Post)'Secularism'. The focus will be on the European context in order to question the revitalization of religions as well as secular formations, and their social and political effects in relation to several recent events regarding European Muslims, such as the murder of Theo van Gogh in NL, the Danish cartoon controversy, the London underground and airport bombings, and the French ban on the Hijab in the public sphere.

These aims will be reached through in-depth conversations with and between prominent scholars in the fields of religious critiques, secularism, feminism, contemporary art theory, as well as the major monotheistic religions. The combination of public lectures, in which scholars (and artists) will be engaged in discussing their work, and the option for participating in a reading group, will make for a well-rounded series of debates. Furthermore, as a follow-up programme, a public series of lectures and debates on a number of recent events, in which images produced by both the media and artists came under attack on religious grounds, are organised by the BAK in autumn of 2008.
