nightcomers, is one of the night programme projects of the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, perhaps the most somnambulist. The conceptual structure of the project was based on the concept of "dazibao" used by Hou Hanru in reference to wall-mounted posters produced by the public during the Chinese Revolution.
The team of young curators invited by Hou Hanru defines "nightcomers" as follows:
"The project targets a wide profile in terms of viewer and participant and derives its power from individual sentences that are becoming increasingly anonymous, and as they become anonymous, become public and ascend within the public sphere. In other words, social and political content suitable for a wall-mounted newspaper is the defining aspect of the project. The source of the variety sought in the videos is our belief that the way to understand the impulsive force in the production of visual material is observing other fields."
Videos will be shown throughout the night in the streets, and the target is to reach a bigger audience than the Istanbul Biennial does in the daytime.
The young curators have defined the maximum 5 minute video production as the format, and invite everyone "who has something to say" to produce. The video programs will be selected from the pool of videos formed from all videos sent to the Biennial and will be exhibited in different parts of the city on certain days of the week. The "nightcomers" project aims to build a strong communication and relationship with its viewer and invites everyone taking part in the project as producer-viewer to share its name. To go out at night, to share the street and to hear one's own voice en masse... Therefore it defines itself as follows:
"Nightcomers hang out on street corners. They seek their own justice. You feel their breath on your neck. Sleepless � a gang of ghosts."
To engage the Biennial programmes more profoundly and intimately with the real urban life of İstanbul, it's absolutely important to surpass the conventional temporal and spatial framework of an art event. Therefore, the Biennial is conceived not only as an exhibition but also as a process and site of cultural production that goes beyond office hours. Night programs have been designed to integrate the public directly with the Biennial project and to create a platform of democratic participation.
"Electronic Image Dazibao", is referring to "Dazibao", a form of radically democratic street postings of public opinions during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The impact of these wall-mounted posters in protest, propaganda and popular communication was strengthened by getting in circulation with some local newspapers from time to time. Today, electronic image and video is a basic mean of communication and expression especially among the young people. Thereof, "nightcomers" project aims to have the video works of everyone who wants to tell his ideas and express himself to be sent to Istanbul Biennial.

Ovul Durmusoglu (b.1978), is an Istanbul/Vienna based curator and critique. She completed her BA in Translation and Interpreting at Bogazici University (Istanbul) and MFA at the theory branch of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design in Sabanci University (Istanbul). She was a participant of Critical Studies (2005-06) at Malmö Art Academy. Besides contributing to the local art and culture magazines such as Genis Aci, Cogito, Kaos GL, she has been working with Altyazi Monthly Cinema Magazine (Istanbul) from its foundation. She published her recent work at Paletten (Gothenburg) and n.paradoxa (London) and Muhtelif (Istanbul/Berlin). After co-curating "Ittihad Sigorta Exhibition" at 2005, she took part in the projects realized by Critical Studies 05-06 Collective such as "Common Ground" (Rooseum Test Site, Malmö), "Lund Museum", (Galleri Pittura, Lund) and "Billboard Project" for Normalization (Rooseum, Malmö). In 2006, she initiated and organized international street action performances and talk series "EXOCiTi" in Istanbul. Recently, she has been involved with some projects of Generali Foundation in Vienna and coordinated the billboard project for Radikal newspaper "RadikalArt: Face-to-Face" presenting over 40 contemporary artworks all around Istanbul.
Marcus Graf (b.1974) lives and woks in Istanbul since 2001. After studying Cultural Sciences and Esthetical Communication in the Institute for Fine Arts, Aesthetics and Art History at the University of Hildesheim, Germany, he has worked for several institutions of art and culture as a curator, instructor, writer, project manager or artist. Since 2004, he is a Ph.D. candidate in Contemporary Art History, Aesthetic and Art Theory at Stuttgart Art Academy in Stuttgart, Germany. He is the artistic director / curator of Aviva Art Program (since 2006) and Under Construction - Tepe Insaat Contemporary Art Space (since 2005). He was the resident curator of Siemens Sanat (2003 � 2007). He is a lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University, VCD Department and Adschool Istanbul Master Program and Yeditepe University, Fine Arts Faculty. He was an instructor at Istanbul Museum of Modern Art. He trained the guides and coordinated the guided tours of the 7th, 8th and 9th International Istanbul Biennial. He worked as project manager and guide in the Protocol Department of the German Pavilion at Expo2000. He was the project manager and curator of the exhibition series sichten (1997 � 2000) and the off gallery Kunst im Bau (1996 � 1998) in Hildesheim, Germany.
Borga Kanturk (b.1978), is an Izmir based artist and curator. He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Dokuz Eylul University Fine Art Faculty Painting Department. He has been working as a research assistant in the same department since 2002. In the recent years Kanturk has participated in many international and national exhibitions. In 2005 he completed a three-month artist residency supported by Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Centre and HIAP in Helsinki, Finland. After this programme he has curated some international exhibitions and events with the supports by FRAME (Fin), Av-Arkki (Fin), K2 Art Center (Izmir). He is the founder and director of KUTU Portable Art Gallery (2001). Also he is co-founder of K2 Art Centre (2002) where he still continues to work as a project director.
Pelin Uran (b.1974) is an Istanbul based curator. After she completed her studies at Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies in 2005, she has worked at Fondazione Sandretto re Rebaudengo in Turin. Now, working as a free-lance curator, Uran recently curated "An Artist Who Cannot Speak English is No Artist" at Artists Space,NY in 2006 and "a forest and a tree" in Newbourg, NY, which will be shown at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienne in March 2007.
Adnan Yildiz (b.1978) is an Istanbul based artist and curator. He studied Psychology (B.A.), and Visual
Arts and Visual Communication Design (MFA). Yıldız has been doing a residency (2006-07) at Curatorlab (research based curatorial residency program) this year, traveling around Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, and Istanbul and working in collaboration with IASPIS. He is granted by S.I. (Sweedish Institute). Starting as an artist, he has shown his work in different countries like Italy, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Recently, he works as a curator focusing on the levels of curatibility, survival strategies and "mobile identities" in the context of contemporary art. Some of his previous projects are "alice vs. Alice", "Ittihad Sigorta Exhibition", "Copykiller" and "i don't know what else to do with myself!" He was one of the participants of the 12nd European Young Artists Biennial (2005) as an artist, and he also participated to the 4th Berlin Biennial (bb4) as a curator ("Fast Forward / Young Curator Workshop"). He is the co-editor of Muhtelif, Istanbul based contemporary art publication. In 2007, he collaborated with Christian Hillesoe for their project shown in the "Homecoming" exhibition (Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum, Hjorring) and he curated "Endless Possibilities" showing Marcel van Eeden and Gökçen Cabadan (Kasa Galeri/Istanbul).
