a few retrospectives in cologne

A FEW RETROSPECTIVES IN OPEN SPACE
by Cevdet Erek

Cevdet Erek’s (1974, Istanbul) presentation at OPEN SPACE at Art Cologne is a direct intervention into the common fair architecture. As an artist, architect and musician, Erek as no other artist plays with space and time components. He composes and (re)composes his works as ingredients of grand ideas which are materialized through continuous output processes of intermediary products. Works as SSS (Shore Scene Soundtrack) and Studio, which are based on direct representation and staging of retrospective action, embrace artist’s hands producing either a soothing sound on the surface of a carpet or drumming a frantic rhythm on a solid surface, thus transforming a performative action into a memory of a landscape and ‘merely levelling the gap between two supposedly
opposing spheres: time and space’.
